What is the Mexican exchange rate?

2 minute read

Cancun Entertainment PackageWhat is the Mexican exchange rate? This is a tricky question because it is constantly changing. Mexican Pesos (MXN) to American or Canadian Dollars can range from anywhere between 10-1 to 16.5-1. Depending on the season and economy at the time, the exchange rate adjusts to Mexico’s consideration of an appropriate number. This is important to remember: As long as the exchange rate is NO lower than 10-1, you aren’t losing any money. At 10-1 you are breaking even. On rates HIGHER than 10-1 you are actually making money on the exchange. The good news is that the average exchange rate over the past year sits at about 15.5 to 1. So before going out to buy gifts or going to an authentic Mexican restaurant downtown, you will want to exchange your money FIRST to get the most out of your purchase! Another important point is that most tourists in Cancun exchange all their cash right away with the idea that they can just exchange it back to their original currency before they return home. WRONG! Exchange rates back from MXN to dollars will never be in your favor. For example, if the exchange rate TO MXN is at 12-1, you can count on the fact that the exchange rate FROM MXN will be around 13-1 or higher. It’s a little trick that exchange companies use to make extra cash. So after all is said and done, here’s my advice: Exchange your money upon arrival to Cancun to get the most out of every penny you brought with you, but do it gradually. If you don’t spend all the money you’ve exchanged, it is quite expensive to change it back. No harm in going to the exchange booth a couple times during your trip. Most hotels allow you to exchange your money right in the lobby. Easy breezy!
