Every year millions of people head to the tropical paradise that is Cancun, making it one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Cancun is known for its lavish resorts, out of this world nightlife and beautiful beaches (14 miles of public beach to be exact ?) but it is also known for a lot of other things too! Here are some fun Cancun facts to know before you go: 1. The sand won’t burn your feet- The sand on Cancun’s beaches is made from crushed coral so it is always cool to the touch so no hot feet no matter the temperature, just cool good times. 2. There’s an entire underwater museum in Cancun- Located between Cancun and Isla Mujeres is a series of underwater statues created by eco-sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor. The underwater museum of contemporary art (MUSA) features over 500 life-size sculptures which makes it one of the largest underwater artificial art attractions in the world. The Second largest barrier reef in the world is in Cancun- The Maya Barrier Reef spans a length of over 700 miles and is located between the shores of Quintana Roo, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize making it the second largest Barrier Reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Five hundred different species of fish, crustaceans and mollusks plus sixty-five different varieties of coral have been documented in the Maya Barrier Reef making it a hot spot for people all over the world to visit! 4. Only three people used to live in Cancun- In January 1970 there were only three people living in Cancun, and they were caretakers of a coconut plantation. Today, over half a million people live in Cancun thanks to the Mexican government’s tourism push and rapid development. 5. There are over 140 hotels with over 24,000 rooms in Cancun so it’s safe to say there is something for everyone and always a place to stay! 6. Cancun is a peninsula on a peninsula- It’s shaped like the number 7 so the hotels on the strip have beachfront facing the Caribbean Sea on one side, and the Nichupte Lagoon on the other. 7. Before Cancún was Cancún, it used to be called Ekab, which means Black Earth. The word Cancún is Mayan and it means the snake pit or nest of serpents. 8. Mayan ruins can be found in Cancun's hotel zone. The archaeological site of El Rey is the largest site in the hotel zone, and it is located near Hilton Cancun Beach & Golf Resort. 9. You’re almost always guaranteed beautiful weather in Cancun. Cancun experiences over 240 days of sunshine with about 80 degrees average temperature annually making for the perfect tropical getaway destination. 10.
